Lords of the Land

Mighty Himalayas, the seat of Lord Mahesh,
from Kashmir to Arunachal Pradesh.

Karakoram, Shivalik and Mishmi,
serenity for the aspiring yogi.

Cloud forests of Khasi and Garo,
offer bio-diversity for tomorrow.

From Mahadev Range to the Vindhya,
look like the backbone of India.

Rocky slopes of Aravali and Girnar,
stopping the sands from spreading far.

Satpuda and the misty Sahyadri,
geography marvel, with a history.

From Nallamala to Javadi highland,
rolling hills a few miles inland.

Rains kissing the peaks of Nilgiri,
along with Palni and Baba Budangiri.

Lords of this spiritual land,
nourishing Bharat, our motherland.

मी अनुभवलेली महाराष्ट्रातील वन्यजीव विविधता

दोडामार्ग तालुल्यातील आर्द्र पानझडी जंगल, जिल्हा सिंधुदुर्ग आज महाराष्ट्र दिन! नावातच महा असलेल्या या प्रदेशाला दैदिप्यमान असा सांस्कृतिक , ऐतिहासिक , साहित्यिक , औद्योगिक व आध्यात्मिक वारसा लाभला आहे. भारताच्या जडणघडणीत बहुतांश क्षेत्रांत मोलाची कामगिरी महाराष्ट्राकडून होत आलेली आहे. क्षेत्रफळाच्या दृष्टीने भारतात तिसऱ्या क्रमांकावर असलेल्या महाराष्ट्रात नैसर्गिक संपत्ती सुद्धा विपुल व वैविध्यपूर्ण आहे. पूर्वी याही पेक्षा समृद्ध नैसर्गिक ठेवा इथे अस्तित्वात होता असे जुनी सरकारी राजपत्र किंवा शास्त्रीय अभ्यासकांच्या नोंदी चाळल्या तर लक्षात येते. आजही शिल्लक असलेल्या नैसर्गिक अधिवासांत जैवविविधता विलक्षण आहे. गेल्या दोन दशकांत केलेल्या भटकंतीत अनुभवलेल्या वन्यजीवनाचा पट तुमच्यासमोर मी काढलेल्या छायाचित्रांच्या माध्यमातून मांडतोय. वन्यप्राण्यांची काही छायाचित्रे जिथे उल्लेख केलाय तेथीलच असतील असे नाही. चितळ किंवा कांचनमृग - जगातील सर्वात शोभिवंत समजले जाणारे हरीण, जे फक्त भारतीय उपखंडातच आढळते! मला याचे दर्शन बोरीवली, गोरेगाव, मेळघाट व ताडोबा अशा विविध ठिकाणी झाले आहे. सर्वात लक्षात राही...

Spring time on Shilonda trail ..

Spring is that time of the year when all trees are sprouting new leaves of myriad colours and flowers of all hues are blossoming all over. Birds are active with their array of melodious calls and whistles and nature dons a new look after the dull winter. This is a time when the forest is as beautiful as it is just after the rains. This spring I chose the Shilonda trail in Borivli National Park in Mumbai, for a Sunday morning walk. I had with me a friend – Ketan – who was taking a nature trail for the first time. My novice nature loving friend did not fail to notice the sudden change in the atmosphere as we entered the forest on my bike from the Borivli gate. A minute ago the road that was full of honking vehicles, exhaust fumes and cement dust even at that early hour (7.30 am is early on a Sunday morning in Mumbai !), suddenly entered the verdant landscape of the Borivli jungle with all its refreshing charm.
