Temples of India.....

India, the origin and stronghold of Vedic Sanatana Dharma (the eternal evolving faith), is naturally home to thousands of beautiful temples, some ancient and some modern. This is despite over 1,000 years of subjugation by barbaric invaders who left no stone unturned literally in their madness to destroy and loot a very sustainable and scientific culture. That is perhaps of the essence of Sanatana Dharma - to stand the test of time! Here is a pictorial glimpse of some of the small and big temples of this holy land, which I had the good fortune of visiting till now.

Yogeshwari Devi Temple at Ambejogai in Beed district, Maharashtra - This is our Kuldevi (patron family deity).

Somnath Temple at Veraval in Gir Somnath district, Gujarat, is one of the 12 sacred Jyotirlings (spiritually powerful Shiva shrines) in the country. History books reveal that it was destroyed several times by Mahmud of Ghazni, once rebuilt by Ahilyabai Holkar and again rebuilt after India's independence and inaugurated by the first President of India, Shri Rajendra Prasad.

Gajanan Maharaj Temple, at Shegaon, Buldhana district, Maharashtra, is the seat of the 20th century sant, Gajanan Maharaj, who is a guru for many like us.

Vyadeshwar Shiv Mandir at Guhagar, Ratnagiri district, Maharashtra, is our Kuldev (patron family deity). This seaside temple is located in the tranquil village of Guhagar.

Keshavraj Vishnu Mandir at Asud, Ratnagiri district, Maharashtra, is located on a green hill near Dapoli, half of which is covered with Betel Nut and Mango orchards and the other half with moist deciduous forest. The undulating pathway to the temple can be hectic, but the peace, purity and greenery of the location makes it worth the effort.

Parshuram Mandir at Parshuram village in Ratnagiri district, Maharashtra, is dedicated to the sixth incarnation of Bhagwan Vishnu. It is situated in a westward spreading offshoot of Sahyadri range near Chiplun. The serene surroundings are a mix of mango orchards and moist deciduous forests.

Ramar Patham shrine at Kodiakkarai (Point Calimere), Nagapattinam district, Tamil Nadu, has the footprints of Bhagwan Ram. It is said that Ram had visited this place located on a hill overlooking the sea, while on his way to Lanka to rescue Devi Sita. It is surrounded by tropical dry evergreen forest and adjoining mangroves.

Siddheshwar Temple in Solapur, Maharashtra is dedicated to Siddheshwar, an incarnation of Bhagwan Shiva. It is beautifully located near a lake and has protective ramparts surrounding it.
